Why hang Ian Thomson for the ‘crime’ of protecting himself?

Somewhat like my fellow National Post columnist Lorne Gunter who has written on the trial of Ontario homeowner Ian Thomson, I am perplexed beyond puzzlement why the Crown is prosecuting this man. For the benefit of those who have escaped the news of this bizarre and sad tale, Mr. Thomson is being tried for picayune charges relating to the handling and storage of firearms in regard to an incident in which — let me use Mr. Gunter’s words — “masked thugs began lobbing Molotov cocktails at his secluded rural home, while also shouting death threats in a pre-dawn assault.”

 

This was in August 2010, at which time Mr. Thomson successfully defended himself against the attempt to incinerate him and his home by shooting several warning shots well away from those seeking to do harm to him and his home.
